Well, How Did We Get Here?
Dr Harvey Smith | Sport and Exercise Psychologist | Glasgow
If you've landed here, you might be wondering who I am and whether I'm the right fit for you. Fair enough; let me introduce myself.
I'm Harvey. I'm a psychologist based in Glasgow, and I support individuals and organisations to strengthen performance, wellbeing, and sustainable habits across sport, exercise, and everyday life. I'm a Chartered Psychologist, HCPC registered, and I completed my Doctorate in Psychology (DPsych) in Sport and Exercise in 2025.
What does that mean in practice?
It means I'm qualified, regulated, and genuinely passionate about this work. But it also means I've spent years sitting with people and athletes who are trying to figure things out. The messy, in-between stuff. The moments where you know something needs to change, but you're not quite sure where to start.
Who I work with
You might be an athlete trying to manage performance anxiety before competition. You might be someone navigating a career change, a life transition, or a tough patch with your motivation. Maybe you're hitting the gym regularly but feel like your head is working against you. Or maybe you just want to understand yourself a bit better.
A lot of the people I work with are ambitious; they care about doing well. But somewhere along the way, unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour have crept in. Confidence dips. Anxiety builds. The "real you" starts to feel a little out of reach.
That's the kind of thing I help with.
How I work
My approach is integrative; drawing on a range of evidence-based frameworks depending on what's most useful for you. That might include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to identify and shift unhelpful thinking patterns, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to build psychological flexibility and clarify what really matters to you, Person-Centred therapy to create a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your experiences, or positive psychology and performance-focused approaches when we're working on goals, confidence, and mental skills.
Sessions are collaborative: we make sense of what's happening, understand the patterns, and then work out practical strategies you can actually use; in training, at work, in relationships, and in everyday life.
I don't do one-size-fits-all. We work at your pace, on your goals.
